A beautiful crocheted headscarf /kerchief with a nice drape. This is perfect to wear every day. I made one for myself and have used it several times. If you know someone losing their hair this would be a great head cover to make as a gift. The softness and versatility will be appreciated.
The pattern works best for advanced crocheters. Beginners looking for a challenge will enjoy this pattern as well. The stitches are not difficult. There are several pieces to make so you won’t get bored. There is some sewing involved (hand or machine depending upon the fabric you choose for the side ties).
If you need a quick gift or feel this is above your skill level, I suggest making the headband.
Supplies Needed:
- 2 – Aunt Lydias Crochet Thread 100% Viscose from Bamboo
- Size 8 steel hook (1.5 MM)
- fabric – you need two pieces knit fabric each measuring 14” x 2.5” or lightweight cotton fabric – two pieces each measuring 16″ x 7″. I have used both and feel a knit fabric works best and is the fastest way to make the side ties.
- sewing thread – match the crochet thread (if possible).
- regular sewing needle

Block.
Finished (blocked) piece will measure approximately 18” x 3”
Pieces B and C (directions for knit and non-knit fabric):
Using knit fabric (which I recommend):
Cut two pieces of fabric each measuring 12” x 2.5”
Knit fabric doesn’t unravel so no need to further prep these pieces.
Place the wrong sides of pieces A and B together with piece A (crocheted fabric) extending about a 1/2” beyond piece B. Also, center piece B (which is 2.5” wide) on piece A (which is 3” wide).
Hand sew pieces A and B together approximately 1/8” from edge of piece B.
Fold piece B over so right side of piece B is facing wrong side of piece A.
Tack at corners on the wrong side of fabric.
When you are finished you won’t see any of the sewing stitches on the right side of the headband (if you matched the sewing thread to the crochet thread).
Repeat on the other side using piece C.

Using cotton fabric:
Cut two pieces of fabric each measuring 16″ x 7″. Iron 1/2″ down each short side (width).
Pin the right sides of pieces A and B together and hand sew the two pieces together using small even stitches along the edge.
Don’t worry so much about the stitches. This is what mine looks like:
Don’t forget the other end of Piece B. That needs to be sewn together.
Repeat on the other side attaching Piece C to Piece A.
Piece D:
150 base chain.
Double Crochet Cluster (DcC) - *yarn over, insert hook into ch or st as indicated, yarn over, draw loop up, yarn over, draw through two loops*, skip 1 ch or stitch, repeat from * to *, yarn over, draw through all three loops on hook.
R1 (right side): Skip 2 ch, work 1 DcC inserting hook into third chain, 1 ch, * work DcC inserting hook into the previous DcC, 1 ch, rep from * ending 1 dc into last ch, turn.
R2: 3 ch, 1 DcC inserting hook into first stitch, 1 ch * 1 DcC inserting hook into same stitch as previous DcC, 1 ch, rep from * ending 1 dc into top of tch, turn.
R3: 3 [Note: you are decreasing three stitches at the beginning and end of the row] slip stitches into first three stitches, ch 3, 1 DcC inserting hook into next stitch, 1 ch * 1 DcC inserting hook into same stitch as previous DcC, 1 ch, rep from * until at last three stitches of row (counting the tch), put last dc into same stitch as last DcC, turn.
Repeat R3 (32 times). Note: the top is not pointy.
Bind off. Weave in ends.

Border for Piece D:
With right side facing you attach thread using a slip stitch at first row on right bottom of Piece D.
Ch 3, 5 dc into row.
Continue with 6 dc into each side row.
At top, crochet 6 dc into each ch space across the top.
Continue with 6 dc into each row down the other side until you reach the bottom.
Bind off. Weave in ends.
Final Sewing
Pin the right sides of Pieces A (with the ties attached) and D together.
Sew or crochet pieces together. I used a slip stitch and crocheted the pieces together. You could also use a child’s needle and the Aunt Lydia’s and sew the pieces together.
You are finished!!!!!
